Welcome to visitors from photoblogs.org and thanks for adding me to the hall of fame!
A big thank you to everyone who nominated me in the Best New Photoblog categeory for the 2007 Photobloggies!
Also, thanks to everyone who stopped by to see my two photos in Brooklyn Artists Gym's recent show Look See: Photographs on Reflection.
Atomische is my nom de lentille and also the name of my photoblog. I am Tom Giebel, 40-something amateur photographer living in Brooklyn, New York City. During the day I run my own web development and consulting business.
Now that I've been posting photos daily for a year, I guess it's time to write something about myself here.
I try to take photos every single day for my site. Lately I've been inspired by the many other NYC-based photobloggers (see links on right) and have embarked on random wanderings around the city. Sometimes I do end up going back to the 'archives' of photos taken on past travels. I've shot over 15,000 frames in the past two years. (And man my arm is tired.)
At the moment my photography is a trial-end-error effort. I shoot, review, get feedback and sometimes go back and shoot again. So, there's no preconceived aesthetic at work, and I can't really describe my style in words.
Going back through the past year's work has been an eye opener--I can see a glimmer of where it's going. I recently read a list of photoblogging cliches over on the wiki at photobloggers.org, and there are very few there I haven't done already. So maybe that's my goal for 2007!
In the past two years I've graduated from the Canon 20d to the 30d and now the 5d. There are a handful of photos from the Pentax Optio WP which is really compact and works underwater without special casings. I recently bought a couple Polaroid SX-70s, but haven't yet had the chance to modify them to work with the 600 film.
I use both Windows and Mac. My main Photoshop plugins are PTLens and Genuine Fractals. I find working in LAB color mode is far more intuitive and faster than RGB mode.
If you like any of my photos, or have any criticism to offer, please leave me a comment! I am completely self-taught, and rely a lot on your feedback. You can email me directly at tom + atsign + atomische.com. It also gives me a boost if you bookmark me on photoblogs.org
Thank you for visiting, and come back soon!
